The famed Medjool date was introduced into the Bard Valley in 1948. Imported from French Morocco in 1927 by the United States Department of Agriculture, it was planted in isolation in Nevada for purposes of evaluation. Several years later offshoots (suckers growing from the base of the female palm) were removed and planted at the USDA date station in Indio, California. After several more years, offshoots from these were removed and distributed to a few growers. Five or more years later, quality Medjools were harvested. |
